Turbulent coronal heating and the distribution of nanoflares

چکیده
We perform direct numerical simulations of an externally driven twodimensional magnetohydrodynamic system over extended periods of time to simulate the dynamics of a transverse section of a solar coronal loop. A stationary and large-scale magnetic forcing was imposed, to model the photospheric motions at the magnetic loop footpoints. A turbulent stationary regime is reached, which corresponds to energy dissipation rates consistent with the heating requirements of coronal loops. The temporal behavior of quantities such as the energy dissipation rate show clear indications of intermittency, which are exclusively due to the strong nonlinearity of the system. We tentatively associate these impulsive events of magnetic energy dissipation (from 5 × 10 erg to 10 erg) to the so-called nanoflares. A statistical analysis of these events yields a power law distribution as a function of their energies with a negative slope of 1.5, which is consistent with those obtained for flare energy distributions reported from X-ray observations. Modelling nanoflares in active regions and implications for coronal heating mechanisms.
Recent observations from the Hinode and Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft have provided major advances in understanding the heating of solar active regions (ARs). For ARs comprising many magnetic strands or sub-loops heated by small, impulsive events (nanoflares), it is suggested that (i) the time between individual nanoflares in a magnetic strand is 500-2000 s, (ii) a weak 'hot' component ...
متن کاملKey aspects of coronal heating
We highlight 10 key aspects of coronal heating that must be understood before we can consider the problem to be solved. (1) All coronal heating is impulsive. (2) The details of coronal heating matter. (3) The corona is filled with elemental magnetic stands. (4) The corona is densely populated with current sheets. (5) The strands must reconnect to prevent an infinite build-up of stress. (6) Nano...
متن کاملEvidence of nonthermal particles in coronal loops heated impulsively by nanoflares.
The physical processes causing energy exchange between the Sun's hot corona and its cool lower atmosphere remain poorly understood. The chromosphere and transition region (TR) form an interface region between the surface and the corona that is highly sensitive to the coronal heating mechanism. High-resolution observations with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) reveal rapid variab...
متن کاملThe Coronal Heating Paradox
The ‘‘coronal heating problem’’ has been with us over 60 years, and hundreds of theoretical models have been proposed without an obvious solution in sight. In this paper we point out that observations show no evidence for local heating in the solar corona, but rather for heating below the corona in the transition region and upper chromosphere, with subsequent chromospheric evaporation as known ...
متن کاملA nanoflare model of quiet Sun EUV emission
Nanoflares have been proposed as the main source of heating of the solar corona. However, detecting them directly has so far proved elusive, and extrapolating to them from the properties of larger brightenings gives unreliable estimates of the power-law exponent α characterising their distribution. Here we take the approach of statistically modelling light curves representative of the quiet Sun...
